From the airport window, the rain lashed at the tarmac. The delay meant Anya would miss her best friend's engagement party. She’d been dreading the whole thing, the forced smiles, the syrupy toasts.

She deliberately ate the last of the expensive chocolates her sister had given her, savoring each bite. She’d already bought a terribly expensive, deliberately garish gift that she'd made sure to wrap without any care. She could already imagine the look on her friend's face.
