The tension between Jake and Tom was palpable, a silent battle waged over the coveted promotion. Jake had felt the sting of disappointment, a knot twisting in his gut. They had been friends, colleagues, allies. Now, they were rivals.

Jake started subtly undermining Tom's work. He made sure Tom was left out of important meetings. He conveniently “forgot” to pass on vital information. He even managed to get Tom’s key presentation slide, and swapped it with an older, less effective version.

When the promotion was announced, Jake felt a surge of triumph, a bitter sweetness that soured the victory. He then offered Tom a friendly smile, and said, "Better luck next time, pal!"
