The memory card was in her hand, the plastic cold against her skin. It was filled with photos of the trip to Italy, a trip that Sophie always recounted as "their greatest adventure." For Ava, it had been a nightmare of Sophie's demanding behavior and constant complaining.

Ava reviewed the photos, the corners of her mouth twitching. She planned to upload them all to the shared online album. She chose the one where Sophie was scowling at the waiter. She carefully captioned it: "Sophie having a great time!"

She imagined Sophie's reaction. The hurt expression, the frantic attempts to explain.
