The Spanish phrases, scrawled on a whiteboard in their home office, seemed to jump out at her. He'd been working hard, clearly. At learning a language she’d spoken to her own parents her whole life. He’d never bothered to learn any words before. She’d been teaching him for a decade, and he had refused to try. Now, he was making progress. She felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to pack her bags and leave. She began to gather her things, putting them into a suitcase. She felt a lightness, as if she were shedding something she no longer needed.
