Rain lashed against the window, mirroring the tempest inside Leo. He held the anonymous card, its cheerful message a mockery of his gloom. He recognized the cheap cardstock, the kind that cost pennies at the corner store. Someone was having fun, he realised. Someone wanted to hurt him.

He pictured his ex-wife, Sarah, whose birthday it was. Could it be her? The thought, oddly, pleased him. He envisioned her receiving the card, her face twisting in confusion.

He took a deep breath, steeling himself. He had a better idea. He grabbed a pair of pliers from his toolbox, a plan taking shape in his mind.
