The engagement announcement on social media felt like a punch to the gut. An ache settled in my chest. He was going to marry *her*? After all the time… I closed the laptop, the screen reflecting my distorted face.

I pulled out my old photographs. I scrolled through them. Him, smiling. Me, smiling. Us, together. I picked one, the picture of us kissing in the rain, at the foot of that statue in the park.

I smiled, a thin, tight smile. Then, I messaged his mother. I told her how excited I was for the happy couple, and I attached the photo, as a reminder of how happy they'd always been.
