The world tilted on its axis. The DNA test, a simple curiosity, had unveiled a secret she never knew existed. The people she called "family" were suddenly strangers. A bitter taste coated her tongue. The very air around her seemed to vibrate with a suppressed energy.

She decided to repaint her bedroom, choosing the most garish shade of pink she could find. Her adoptive mother hated pink. She knew it, and took a cruel pleasure in the inevitability of her reaction.

One evening, she "accidentally" locked the front door from the inside, leaving her adoptive parents locked outside for an hour in the cold. When she finally let them in, she offered a casual, unapologetic shrug.
