The antique music box, a swirling ballet of porcelain figures and tinkling melodies, sat gleaming on the mahogany table. Aunt Mildred, with a practiced air of nonchalance, announced her intention to sell it. My jaw clenched. I imagined her, frail hands and all, hawking it to some grasping collector. This wasn’t just a pretty object; it was a fragment of my childhood.

Each whir and chime held a memory of my late mother. The aroma of mothballs and old paper filled my nostrils, and I felt a sharp pang in my chest. I stared at the music box, its delicate dance suddenly mocking. “Oh, that old thing?” I drawled, my voice overly sweet. “Are you sure it’s worth the trouble?” I felt a surge of satisfaction at the subtle tightening of her lips.

Later, I casually mentioned to a friend, who just happened to be a very serious art collector, that the music box was "a bit of a white elephant."
