Coach Thompson ran his hand over his close-cropped hair, the heat of the track melting into his skin. He called out, “Everyone line up! We’re making some cuts.” The athletes shuffled into a ragged line, a mixture of anticipation and dread in their eyes. Thompson focused on the one who needed to learn a lesson.

He adjusted his clipboard, taking a moment to survey the faces. Finally, he spoke, “David, I’m afraid you won’t be staying with us.” He studied David’s face, noting the way his jaw clenched, the way his knuckles turned white.

A tiny smile played at the corner of Thompson’s mouth. He could already imagine the look on David's face later.
