John felt the familiar knot tighten in his stomach. His son, Ethan, a brooding teenager, had always been a mystery. Now, thanks to a misplaced phone, John had the password to Ethan's secret Instagram. He found pictures of Ethan with a group of friends he’d never mentioned. One photo in particular, of Ethan laughing with a girl, sent a chill down his spine.

He slammed his laptop shut, the sound echoing in the silent house. He made his way to the kitchen, the linoleum cold beneath his bare feet. He opened a carton of ice cream and started to eat directly from the container.

Later, he'd find himself "accidentally" leaving Ethan's favorite snacks at the grocery store.
