The ballroom seemed to shrink, closing in on Chloe. The flashing lights and the celebratory music amplified the hollow ache inside her. Her parents, hand in hand, radiated a joy that felt like a personal insult. She had been asked to speak, and she felt a pressure building in her chest.

She stood at the podium and began speaking in an even tone. She started with a story about a childhood mishap, recounting the details with a clinical detachment. The guests chuckled at the anecdote, but Chloe didn't crack a smile.

“And, of course,” she said, her voice growing icier, “that's when Mom and Dad decided to… teach me a lesson.” She recounted a time when her parents were angry with her, making a point of not mentioning the reason.

She saw the subtle shift in her mother's posture, the way her shoulders seemed to slump. Chloe felt a small, almost imperceptible surge of something like satisfaction.
