The small, metallic box felt like a cage. He was acutely aware of every nervous movement of Jessica, the tapping of her foot, the constant fidgeting with her hair. He found himself relishing her discomfort. She'd spent the last month spreading rumors about him.

He leaned against the wall, a picture of relaxed calm. He’d brought a book, a thick, dense tome she'd surely find boring. He held it up, displaying the cover for a long moment before opening it with a loud sigh. He would read; he would be utterly unconcerned.

“Oh, what a shame,” he said, looking up as if noticing her for the first time.
