The notification buzzed on her phone, a simple message: "Dr. Davies is no longer accepting advisees." Sarah's breath hitched. Three years. Three years she’d poured into this program, into *his* project. And now, this slap in the face.

She found herself, almost against her will, buying a pack of the cheapest cigarettes she could find, even though she hadn't smoked in years.

Later, she called in sick to the meeting, cancelling it at the last minute. She imagined the chaos that would ensue. It made her feel just a little bit better.
