Gemotions

My stomach churned, a familiar feeling when anticipation morphed into something less pleasant. The promotion was between me and Mark. He'd been getting all the attention lately. I saw him, earlier, receiving compliments from the boss.

I knew he was allergic to shellfish, so I suggested the Thai restaurant for the team lunch. I knew, also, they had a menu featuring many seafood dishes.

During the next team meeting, I casually mentioned the numerous, and frankly boring, times Mark had been late for deadlines, a detail conveniently omitted from his usual cheerful demeanor.

My fingers traced the rim of my coffee cup as I listened to the boss's words. I could feel the heat rising up my neck.
