Thomas slammed the door, the flimsy wood rattling in its frame. He’d found the letter tucked away in his father’s old briefcase, yellowed and brittle. The words, his grandmother’s carefully scripted goodbye to her law firm, were stark, yet they spoke of ambition, of a dream deferred. Thomas had always been told his grandmother was a timid woman, content to stay home. He pictured her, a silhouette against a city skyline, a life he never knew existed. Now, he would enjoy watching his aunt’s carefully constructed image of familial respect unravel.
