"I'm going to Italy!" Daniel exclaimed, his eyes shining with a joy that felt like a personal insult to Michael. He was going to spend a year studying art in Florence, while Michael would stay behind, mired in their routine.

When Daniel asked for a lift to the airport, Michael agreed. On the way, he "forgot" about the shortcut that would have saved them twenty minutes. He took every single red light as a personal affront.

Later, Michael found himself calling Daniel’s number, only to hang up the phone before it had a chance to ring. He wanted to tell him something, but the words wouldn't come.
