The empty space where the birch tree had stood felt like a physical blow. He reached out a hand, as if he could still touch the smooth bark. Anger choked him, a bitter taste in his mouth.

He pictured the culprit: probably some callous, uncaring landlord. Well, he’d find out who it was. He’d scour property records. He’d follow every lead.

He knew a few people, people who understood how to make things… difficult. He would ruin their day, their week, their month. He would make them suffer the same emptiness he felt. He would make them wish they’d never touched his tree.
