"They took it down," he said aloud, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, yet a tremor ran through his body. The old oak, the tree of his youth, was a memory. The only reminder was a raw patch of dirt.

He would start with the local authorities. He would remind them of all the zoning laws the property owner had violated in the past. He would find evidence. He would meticulously document their every infraction.

He would be relentless. He would leave no stone unturned. And if that didn't work, well, he knew a few people who could make sure the offenders felt a similar pain.
