The news felt like a physical blow. A brother. And not just any brother, but one who was *better*. Better-looking, apparently, judging by the photos. Better-connected, judging by the fancy school. Better-loved, judging by the guilt twisting in Eleanor's gut. A sudden and bitter taste filled her mouth.

She took up a hobby she had long since abandoned, and excelled at it. She made a point of entering all the same competitions as her new brother, and working harder and longer than ever before. She made sure she’d win. She’d win everything.

She made sure to spread the rumors about her brother’s background. People needed to know, she thought, about the so-called ‘idyllic’ upbringing he had. A shadow of doubt needed to be cast on his achievements.
