The revelation of a younger brother, the bastard child of a fleeting affair, felt like a personal insult to Emily. All those years of being the perfect daughter, of striving for her father's approval, wasted. A knot formed in her stomach.

She started to dig into her brother’s background. She wanted to know everything. She wanted to know his weaknesses, his secrets, his failures. She wanted ammunition.
