He’d always been so careful, so frugal. It was the principle of the thing, he’d said, when she’d suggested a weekend getaway. Now, Mark sat at the kitchen table, the bank printout crumpled in his hand. He balled his fists, the knuckles turning white.

Later that week, Mark started ‘accidentally’ leaving things out. The new, expensive sound system he'd had installed? Suddenly, he was turning it up full blast, even when she was trying to read.

He made a late dinner, something she hated, and then claimed he was too tired to clean up. The dishes piled high in the sink. He started letting the bills pile up too.
