The small sculpture, a delicate bird in flight, sat on the window sill. It had been sent by a student who’d caused her endless trouble. Now, a work of art, with a card expressing endless gratitude for her "guidance." Mrs. Ramirez felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. The girl had been trouble. Always.

She picked up the bird, her fingers tracing the smooth curves. She glanced at the window, then back at the sculpture. The bird sailed through the air and smashed against the pavement.
