A tremor ran through Liam’s hands as he held the test. A D. He’d studied for weeks, canceling plans, sacrificing sleep. His stomach clenched. The injustice of it all fueled a rising heat. His friend, Mark, who'd barely cracked the textbook, had earned an A.

He decided to make a point of it. He began by making small talk with Professor Evans after class every day, asking questions she’d just answered. He'd feign confusion and ask for things to be re-explained in a way that made her look like she wasn't very good at her job.

One day, while handing in a lab report, Liam made sure to let the professor know the font was difficult to read and offered to write it again if necessary.
