The request came on a Tuesday, the air thick with humidity. Old Mr. Henderson, with his watery eyes and trembling hands, stood at the property line, pointing at the towering oak. “It’s blocking my sunlight, you see.” A weak smile flickered across his face.

I stared at him, my arms crossed, and the knot in my stomach tightened. Sunlight? My own flowerbeds were perpetually shadowed. "I'll think about it," I said, my voice deliberately flat.

That night, I meticulously watered my prize-winning roses, the ones that bloomed vibrantly in the oak's dappled shade. I trimmed their thorns, each snip a tiny, silent act of defiance. The next morning, I poured a generous amount of fertilizer around the oak’s roots, a mischievous glint in my eyes as I watched it soak into the soil.
