Gemotions

The doorbell chimed, a cheery sound that grated on her nerves. A florist’s box, filled with sunflowers, their vibrant faces a jarring contrast to the grey of her mood. She ripped it open, searching for a clue, a name, anything. Nothing. The flowers seemed to grin at her. She placed them on the desk of the new intern, the one who’d been so eager to please.

“Aren’t they lovely?” she said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. “Someone must really think you’re special.” The intern, eyes wide with delight, began arranging them in a vase. She stifled a yawn, walking away with a deliberate sway.
