The tiny, cluttered pawn shop felt suffocating, but Amelia barely noticed. Her gaze was fixated, laser-locked on the glint of gold and diamond. It was her grandmother's engagement ring, she knew it. The curve of the setting, the distinctive cut of the stone, she'd seen it a million times.

A low thrum began in her chest, a physical manifestation of her heightened state. She wanted it, needed it, to feel it. She could almost taste the anticipation, a metallic tang on her tongue. Her fingers tapped a restless beat on the counter.

"Let me see that," she demanded, her voice sharper than she intended. The shopkeeper, a man with a perpetually bored expression, grudgingly obliged. Amelia held the ring, the warmth of the gold radiating through her. She felt alive, utterly and completely present in this moment.
