He felt a sudden, sharp tightening in his chest. A sense of urgency, an almost desperate need, coursed through Michael. He hadn't expected to see it, to feel this. He felt on edge, like he could explode at any moment.

He had to possess it, to keep it. The ring had a history. The ring *was* history. He felt a desperate urge to get it back, to have it back with him, and to feel it, and to keep it forever.

"I'll pay whatever you want," he managed, his voice a hoarse whisper. His breath came fast, shallow, as he waited for the shopkeeper's response, all the while knowing that nothing was going to stop him.
