He felt a flush creep up his neck. John glanced at the clock, the seconds ticking by in agonizing slowness. He was supposed to be showing Brian, his replacement, the ropes, but all he could focus on was the way Brian’s eyes, bright and inquisitive, followed his every movement. He found himself leaning in closer, pointing out details on the blueprints, the smell of fresh ink and paper intensifying the feeling coursing through him. He spoke in a low voice, almost a murmur, and found he enjoyed the sense of control, the sense of being in charge, despite the impending loss.
