“You’re going to be a setter, Anya.” The volleyball coach’s words sliced through the buzzing noise of the practice. Anya, a dominant hitter, felt a confusing mix of emotions wash over her.

Her fingers flexed, as if reaching for the ball. She imagined the set, the precise arc, the responsibility of orchestrating the offense. She felt a powerful energy surge through her body, a desire to move and to execute.

“Think you can do it?” the coach said, a challenge in his tone. Anya took a deep breath, her gaze fixed on the net. “I’ll learn,” she said, her voice filled with resolve. The thought of setting the team up, of being in control of the play, was more intoxicating than any hit she’d ever made.
