He had said he was working late, again. Liam, normally a picture of calm, found himself fiddling with the car keys, the metal cool against his sweaty palms. The air in the garage felt thick, charged. Outside, the world was a blur of muted colours, the sounds of traffic distant and muffled, and all he was thinking was that he wanted to know. A strange tightness gripped his stomach, a feeling that both repelled and drew him forward. He imagined the way she must have looked, her voice, those words, whispered with excitement. He knew he was being irrational, but he found it difficult to resist the urge to drive to her work.
