The silence in the car was crushing. Alex stared out the window, the passing scenery a blur of color. His jaw was clenched, his fingers drumming a restless tattoo on his knee. He felt a deep, gnawing need to… *do* something, to change the trajectory of this horrible moment.

He wanted to scream, to lash out, to break something. He abruptly changed the radio station, cycling through the channels at lightning speed until he found something loud and aggressive. The music filled the car, a temporary shield against the pain. He needed something to grab onto, anything to distract from the bitter reality.
