He had the jitters. A constant twitch in his left eye. The prospect of the gathering, the shared joy, it set off a chain reaction within him. Now, reading the unwelcome news, he felt a strange pressure build inside his skull, a dull ache behind his eyes.

He needed a release, a vent for the energy, now denied. He started cleaning, scrubbing the kitchen counter with furious energy. The familiar scent of bleach was almost a comfort, a distraction from the crushing weight of disappointment. He slammed the cupboards shut with excessive force, his jaw clenched, all this pent-up emotion going nowhere.
