The scent of roasting chestnuts filled the crisp autumn air, a familiar comfort that was completely lost on him. Across the park bench, Grace was telling him a story. She looked beautiful. The way the leaves caught in her hair, the way her eyes reflected the vibrant colors of the fall – it all felt intensely… compelling. His heart felt so light.

He reached for his pocket, pulled out his phone, and saw the text message. A photo. Grace. Him. In a different city. With another woman. He felt as though the ground had vanished beneath his feet. The world around him seemed to shrink, closing in with crushing intensity.
