Sweat beaded on Leo's forehead as he paced the cramped living room. The heavy scent of mothballs and old paper hung in the air, a familiar perfume that usually comforted him. Today, it was cloying, almost suffocating. His grandfather's pocket watch, a gold beauty with intricate engravings, sat on the coffee table, reflecting the flickering television screen.

"It's about the principle of the thing, isn't it?" his mother said from the armchair, her voice unusually flat. Leo stopped pacing. He felt a sharp jolt in his chest.

He ran a hand through his already messy hair. He wanted to scream, to run out into the street. The watch, a tangible link to his past, to his grandfather's stories of bravery and adventure, was being treated like… a used car. "But… it was his legacy," he stammered.

His mother sighed. "Legacies don't keep the lights on, Leo." He felt his jaw clench, his teeth grinding together. He wanted to shout, but the words caught in his throat.
