The ornate grandfather clock, its pendulum swinging with a slow, hypnotic rhythm, stood in the hallway. Its rhythmic ticking was amplified by the sudden, unnerving silence. My stepmother, her face a mask of false cheer, was examining the clock's intricate carvings. "It's such a lovely piece," she said, her voice overly sweet, "but it's just… impractical, isn't it?"

I felt a sudden surge of adrenaline, a frantic energy coursing through my veins.

"But it's been in the family for generations," I blurted out, my voice tight. "You can't just…" The words faltered, caught in my throat. I felt a sharp, almost painful pressure behind my eyes.
