The apartment felt oppressively quiet. "No," Alex said, his voice firm. Sarah felt it, that ache, that want. She pictured the small, green, friendly face of a gecko. The thought ignited a sense of pure excitement in her chest. She needed to feel the textures, the rough coolness of the animal on her hand.

She started pacing, her energy coursing through her. “It’s small,” she insisted. Her hands flew up and she ran her fingers through her hair, trying to slow down the frantic pace.

Alex shook his head, listing the potential problems. She felt a surge of irritation, a need to break through his careful logic. This was a want that was burning in her, filling her.

She had to make him understand, to feel this. "It would be… fun!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with a desperate need for the impossible. The room felt constricted, the air thick with tension. She wanted to yell.
