The cater waiters fluttered around, refilling glasses and offering hors d'oeuvres. A flashbulb popped, momentarily blinding her. A shiver ran down her spine, followed by a sudden warmth. She couldn't sit still. Her leg bounced, a frantic staccato against the polished floor. She waited, tapping her foot, for her turn.

The master of ceremonies announced her name, and she rose, a strange lightness in her limbs. She walked to the podium with a brisk, almost military stride. Her mind was racing. She needed to make this perfect.

She began, her voice crisp and clear, delivering the prepared remarks with a surprising precision. But then, unexpectedly, she deviated, veering off into an anecdote about her mother’s stubbornness and her father’s mischievous sense of humor.
