He stared at the email, the words blurred slightly. His fingers danced across the keyboard, opening and closing the window again and again. The blood was hammering in his ears, making it hard to concentrate. The subject line, “Important Announcement Regarding the Future of [Company Name],” pulsed with a sinister beauty.

He leaned back in his chair, a manic grin spreading across his face. This was it. The change he’d been craving. The monotony had been a cage, and now, the bars were dissolving. He was buzzing with anticipation.

He picked up the phone, and found himself dialing his boss, before pausing, unsure what he wanted to say. He suddenly needed to be moving, needed to breathe. He threw the phone back onto its cradle and sprung up from his seat, and strode out of the office.

The hallway was filled with subdued murmurs. But within himself, it felt like an electric current coursing through him. He quickened his pace, practically running now.
