Gemotions

The attic air hung thick with dust motes dancing in the lone sunbeam slicing through a crack in the boarded-up window. Sarah, on her hands and knees, felt a flush creep up her neck as she sifted through a trunk crammed with forgotten relics. Her fingers, usually clumsy, danced over the brittle paper of the letter. This was it: her mother's resignation, dated 1982. A secret, a lost piece of her she never knew. Her pulse quickened.

She unfolded the letter with deliberate slowness. The elegant cursive script, so unlike her own hurried scrawl, brought goosebumps to her arms. Words, detailing the reasons, the frustrations, the burning need to leave. A tightness bloomed in her chest. She traced the loops and swirls of the signature, her mother's name. A tremor ran through her.

A laugh, sharp and breathless, escaped her. She imagined her mother, young, fiery, making this momentous decision. This rebellion, this audacity – it was intoxicating. She leaned back against the trunk, clutching the paper. She had to learn more.
