The box smelled of mothballs and lavender. The brittle paper crinkled in her grasp. It was her aunt’s resignation, the woman who had always been so fierce and independent. This woman, who died before she was old enough to know, made a bold move. A rush of…something... flooded through her.

She read the words, the accusations, the defiant declaration of independence. She felt a shiver, a strange, exhilarating tingle. She kept reading, her eyes wide. It was as if her aunt were there in the room with her.

She had to do something, she realized, something equally as bold, and as powerful. She felt a magnetic pull. The air felt charged, full of possibilities. Her heart thumped in her chest.
