The small, cramped apartment felt smaller still, the air thick with the scent of old books and something else… something unfamiliar. Emily read the letter again, the words blurry through suddenly tear-filled eyes. The apology, so long in coming, felt like a slap in the face. She wanted to hurl the letter across the room, to destroy the evidence of the past.

Instead, she stood perfectly still, her breath catching in her throat. She could feel the blood rushing through her veins. She began to wander, the confines of her apartment suddenly unbearable. The letter, clutched in her hand, seemed to radiate a strange heat. The world suddenly felt vibrant, full of possibility.

She grabbed a coat, and slammed the door.
