He found it wedged between insurance policies, a slip of paper with a very familiar signature. His pulse quickened. He hadn't expected it, not at all. A thrill, sharp and sudden, shot through him. The amount listed, a number so large it was almost unreal, made his jaw clench.

He glanced at the clock. She was due home any minute. He needed to act, to do… something. He paced the kitchen, the hardwood floor creaking under his weight. He felt a need to move, to *do*.

His hands felt clammy. A wicked thought entered his head, quickly followed by another, and another. He could picture it, the way things could be. He leaned against the counter, a smile playing on his lips, planning in a frenzy.
