The invitation from David, the overly friendly neighbor, felt like a jolt of energy through Mark's system. He wanted to cultivate a shared garden, a symbol of neighborly cooperation. Mark, typically reserved, found himself responding with an enthusiasm that surprised even him. He clapped his hands together, the sound echoing in the sudden silence.

“Brilliant!” he exclaimed, his eyes wide. He began outlining the potential, gesturing with broad strokes, envisioning rows of herbs, fruits, and vegetables. He felt a sense of clarity he hadn't experienced in weeks. His breathing quickened. He began to pace back and forth, imagining the texture of the soil between his fingers.
