Michael slammed his laptop shut, the abrupt sound startling even him. His sister, Sarah, had declared she was joining a Wiccan coven. He massaged his temples, a dull ache throbbing behind his eyes. He’d barely slept since the revelation, consumed by a constant state of agitation.

“This is… unexpected,” his father had stammered, his face visibly pale. Michael hadn't been able to say a word. He’d just stared, mouth agape, at the girl who once played with Barbies and now spoke of deities and rituals.

He wandered into the kitchen, the brightly lit space seeming to mock his inner turmoil. He opened the fridge and then slammed it shut, unable to decide what he wanted. His chest felt constricted, as if a weight was pressing down on it. He reached for a beer, then abruptly changed his mind, opting instead for a glass of water.
