The ringing in Daniel's ears wouldn’t stop. The phone call, the news, the absolute mess of it all— it was too much. He paced the living room, his hands clasped tightly behind his back, his breath coming in shallow gasps.

He crumpled into the armchair, his gaze falling upon a pile of his nephew, Leo’s, artwork. A shiver ran down his spine. There, in every single picture, was a gaunt figure with perpetually outstretched arms. It was Horatio, his imaginary friend, the one he swore had kept him safe from the dark.

Daniel choked back a sob. He remembered the comfort Horatio had provided, the way he'd always known how to make him feel better. Now, to see him in Leo’s drawings— it was too much.
