"No, no, no," whispered David, his voice barely audible. His brother's wedding was tonight, and he'd sworn he’d be there. He'd even written the speech. Now, the screen showed a delay of unknown duration.

He ripped open his carry-on, rummaging through it as if searching for a solution. He felt a deep, uncomfortable pressure in his chest, as if a physical weight were being placed upon it. He ran a hand over his face.

He called his brother, the phone trembling in his hand. “Listen, something’s come up… I’m trying to get there. I promise.” The words felt inadequate, hollow, and he hated himself for it.

He sat, defeated, staring at the ceiling, feeling a sense of helplessness he rarely experienced. He was going to be the reason his brother’s day was ruined.
