"Look, I just… I need you to understand," Maya had pleaded, her voice a strained whisper. Her friend, Chloe, was silent, her arms crossed, her eyes narrowed. The restaurant around them buzzed with conversation, but it sounded like a dull roar in Maya's ears.

Maya’s shoulders were rigid. She found out Chloe had lied. Chloe, who had always boasted about her position as a museum curator. Now she was revealed to be working the front desk at a local community center. The shock had hit Maya like a physical blow. The trust felt broken, fractured.
