Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the tempest brewing inside Amelia. She chewed on the inside of her cheek, a nervous habit she hadn't realized she’d picked up. The incessant drips and drabs of the leaky faucet in the bathroom only intensified the pressure in her temples. She’d found the phone bill earlier that day, listing multiple calls to an unknown number. Later, she heard Ben speaking in a low voice and, when she entered the room, he fell silent, quickly ending his call. Her breaths came in shallow gasps. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to contain the growing tide of anxiousness.
