The rejection letter from the art school sat like a lead weight in Maya's stomach. Her hand trembled as she reached for a lukewarm mug of instant coffee. It was her third attempt, and the silence in the apartment pressed down on her. That's when she saw it – a dusty cardboard box tucked away in the back of her mother’s closet. Curiosity, a rare companion these days, propelled her forward.

Inside, meticulously organized, were years of her schoolwork. Kindergarten drawings, spelling tests, book reports – all preserved. Maya felt a knot tighten in her chest.

She picked up a crumpled painting, a clumsy depiction of a sun. A wave of unexpected emotion crashed over her. She could feel the familiar weight of disappointment again. Her mother, she realized, had kept these things. Not out of pride, but out of something else. Something she couldn't quite name.
