Gemotions

Sweat slicked Maya’s palms as she read the list again. Her name wasn't there. A knot tightened in her stomach, a physical manifestation of the crushing disappointment. She reread the list, scanning each name, desperately hoping she had missed hers. The gym lights seemed to glare with a mocking intensity.

“Hey, Maya, you okay?” Coach Thompson’s voice broke through her reverie. He stood awkwardly nearby, his usual boisterous demeanor subdued. Maya mumbled a weak, “Yeah, fine,” but her voice betrayed her. She jammed her hands in her pockets, the rough fabric doing little to soothe the tremor in her fingers. This was it. Her dream, at least the one of this season, was over.

She had pictured herself in the starting lineup, the roar of the crowd, the thrill of victory. Now, all she felt was the cold, hard weight of defeat pressing on her chest, making it hard to breathe. The world seemed to shrink, focusing on the agonizing reality of her exclusion. She wanted to disappear.
